The Toxicology Society of South Africa (TOXSA) was established as a Learned Society on 15 May 2001 in Stellenbosch by a group of interested scientists. The aims of the Society are to promote and advance the study and application of toxicology in all its aspects in South Africa, and to cultivate the highest principles of practice and ethics in persons engaged in the sciences of toxicology and ancillary sciences.

From its inception, the Society has received the active support of the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX), and its affiliate body, the Federation of European Toxicologist & European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX). TOXSA was admitted as a full national member society of IUTOX in 2004, having complied with all criteria of membership. We have sent representatives to IUTOX conferences, and have been assisted by IUTOX in the form of experts who have contributed to our local scientific meetings.

In addition to this activity, the TOXSA President, Professor Mary Gulumian, has taken part in IUTOX Congresses of Toxicology in Developing Countries in recent years. These congresses aim to promote toxicology in the developing world, and are a relevant forum for our Society as we work towards establishing toxicology as a significant discipline in SA (

TOXSA has recently become an accredited voluntary association of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) (
